Worms are the gardeners best tool in their shed.
What worms can do for your garden.
Produce vermicast which is those lumps you sometimes see on your lawn. Vermicast contains nutrients in a form that are readily taken up by plants, such as nitrates, exchangeable phosphorous, soluble potassium, calcium and magnesium
Aerate the soil producing healthier roots and better plants
Easy-Veg worm farms are made from recycled plastic, consisting of 3 separate teirs have a tap for collecting the worm pee and can be easily moved.
As a fertiliser, vermicast contains nutrients in a form that are readily taken up by plants, such as nitrates, exchangeable phosphorous, soluble potassium, calcium and magnesium (1). A typical breakdown of vermicast is as follows:
| pH | N | P | K | S | Mg | Ca | CEC (Me/100g) | Organic Matter (humus) |
| 6.6 | 2.3 | 3.0 | 0.6 | 0.1 | 0.65 | 8.6 | 52.75 | 20% |
Microbially, vermicast contains a far more diverse microbial population than other composts (3). Micro organisms play an important part in soil fertility, they not only mineralize complex substances into plant available nutrients but bacteria in the earth worms' digestive system also synthesize a whole series of biologically active substances including plant growth regulators.
Earth worms promote the production of plant hormones, auxins, gibberellins and cytokinins from organic waste dramatically Auxins are responsible for cell elongation, cytokinins for promoting cell division and gibberellins for stem elongation. These hormones are dose significant and play a fundamental role in plant metabolism. They can influence plant growth and development as well as crop quality significantly when present at very low concentrations (4).
Castings - are one of the best and safest fertilizers around. It's also ph neutral meaning that it's halfway between acidic and alkaline. Castings feel and smell like good soil because effectively that's all they are; in fact, it's said that worm castings are 5 times richer in nutrients than good topsoil.
Use - Worms casts can be mixed with potting mix, seed raising mix and compost (about 20% casts to 80% mix), and is the perfect medium into which to plant seedlings, plants and trees. Casts do not have to be diluted for use in the garden, but make sure they are tilled into the soil. For best results, add compost and mulch as soil cover.
Leachate - a fluid called leachate seeps through the material the worms digest. Worm leachate is collected from the tap on the bottom container. This can be collected whenever you want to use it as an organic fertilizer, or when it is full. The juice is very high in nitrogen and needs to be watered down to about 1:10, or so it’s the colour of weak tea. The liquid is so rich that it can be harmful if not diluted.
